Wandering the Canadian Rockies in Black & White

When you step into the Canadian Rockies, you’re met with towering peaks, shimmering lakes, and an overwhelming sense of scale. While the colors of these landscapes are unforgettable, black and white photography brings out something deeper — the texture, the drama, the mood.

Below, I share some of my favorite monochrome captures from my travels, each one showing how timeless the Rockies feel when reduced to light and shadow.

Maligne Lake Reflections (Black & White)

Still waters turn into a perfect mirror, creating a scene of balance and calm. In B&W, the silence of the moment becomes even stronger.

Why Black & White Works So Well Here

  • It removes distractions and highlights the structure of the land.

  • Shadows and light gain more weight, emphasizing depth.

  • The Rockies feel both timeless and more dramatic in monochrome.

Whether it’s waterfalls, alpine lakes, or vast ridgelines, the Canadian Rockies are a playground for photographers. Stripped of color, they reveal their essence — raw, textured, and profoundly moving.

Exploring Abstract Photography: Motion, Blur, and Texture

Abstract photography offers a way to see the world differently, turning everyday scenes into visual art that emphasizes motion, texture, and emotion. By thinking outside the box, photographers can capture fleeting moments in ways that go beyond traditional compositions. Through motion blur, layered textures, and creative exposure, the ordinary transforms into something extraordinary.

One of my favorite ways to explore abstract photography is through motion. In Urban Blur, city streets in Lima, Ohio, become a dynamic tapestry of light and movement, showing the energy of urban life in a completely new way. The streaks and layers create a sense of speed and rhythm that a static image could never convey.

Autumn Inspiration

Nature provides endless opportunities for abstraction. In Aspen Blur in Autumn, the golden aspens sway gently, and with intentional motion blur, the leaves merge into a flowing, dreamlike pattern. This technique captures the essence of fall while emphasizing movement and color over literal detail.

Summer Vibes

Summer leaves can also be transformed into abstract art. My photograph Summer Leaves Abstract Motion takes the vibrant greens of summer foliage and turns them into a textured, painterly composition. The motion blur emphasizes the play of sunlight through leaves, creating depth and energy in every frame.

Sunset and Light

Even something as simple as a sunset can become a study in abstraction. In Sunset Motion, I captured the fading light across the horizon with deliberate motion, producing streaks of color and texture that elevate the ordinary sunset into a dynamic work of art.

Why Abstract Photography Matters

Abstract photography encourages viewers to slow down, reflect, and see familiar subjects in new ways. By using motion, blur, and texture, artists can evoke feelings, emphasize patterns, and explore the world’s beauty beyond literal representation. Whether you’re photographing urban streets, forests, leaves, or sunsets, abstraction allows creativity to flourish.

Exploring String Lake in Grand Teton National Park: Summer, Fall, and Night Skies

Nestled in the heart of Grand Teton National Park, String Lake is a true hidden gem for visitors seeking serenity, reflection, and breathtaking scenery. This shallow, crystal-clear lake sits just north of Jenny Lake and offers easy access, incredible views of the Teton Range, and opportunities to hike, paddle, or simply relax along its shores. Over the course of different seasons and times of day, String Lake transforms into an artist’s canvas — vibrant in summer, peaceful in fall, and magical under the stars.

One of the best ways to take in this beauty is through photography, and I’ve captured some of my favorite moments here. In summer, the calm waters mirror the jagged peaks of the Tetons. You can see that serenity in my fine art photograph “String Lake Reflections in Summer”, where the alpine landscape comes alive in crisp detail. For visitors, summer is also the perfect season to swim, picnic, or simply walk along the lake’s gentle shoreline.

Kayaking in Autumn

As the seasons shift, String Lake becomes even more captivating. In fall, the trees surrounding the shoreline glow in golden tones, their reflections dancing across the surface of the water. It’s also one of the best times to bring a kayak, offering a quiet way to explore the lake while soaking in the colors of autumn. My piece “Kayaks on String Lake” captures that blend of human adventure and natural splendor. Paddling here allows you to experience the Tetons from a whole new perspective, especially with the crisp air and fewer crowds that come after the summer rush.

Night Photography at String Lake

When the sun dips below the mountains, String Lake reveals yet another face — a window into the cosmos. Far from city lights, this part of Grand Teton National Park offers some of the darkest skies in the country. On a clear night, the Milky Way rises above the Tetons, reflecting faintly on the water’s surface. My photograph “String Lake Milky Way” brings this experience to life, capturing the awe of standing beneath a galaxy-filled sky. For night photographers, String Lake is a must-visit spot, offering both foreground beauty and celestial wonders.

Planning Your Visit

The String Lake Loop Trail is one of the best ways to experience the area. Beginning at the String Lake Trailhead, located just north of Jenny Lake, the trailhead is easy to reach: turn west off Teton Park Road at the North Jenny Lake Junction (about 10.6 miles north of Moose Junction and 10 miles south of Jackson Lake Junction). Continue 1.4 miles to the String Lake Trailhead turn-off, with the parking area located immediately to the left. The loop trail circles the lake for about 3.7 miles, making it an easy, family-friendly hike with plenty of places to stop for photos.

Whether you’re visiting in the heat of summer, the quiet of autumn, or the stillness of night, String Lake is a destination that offers something unique in every season. For me, it has been a place of inspiration and creativity, and through my photography, I hope to share that magic with others. Exploring Maine in Autumn: A Journey Through Nature and Color

There’s something unforgettable about experiencing Maine in the fall. As the leaves shift into a fiery display of crimson, gold, and orange, the state’s wild landscapes become a living canvas. From rugged mountains to serene lakes and rushing waterfalls, Maine’s natural beauty feels especially alive during autumn, making it a dream destination for travelers, hikers, and photographers alike.

Mount Katahdin in Maine viewed from Abol Bridge with peak reflections on calm water framed by colorful fall foliage.

On my journey through Maine, I explored some of the most breathtaking spots that capture the season’s magic. At Mount Katahdin from Abol Bridge, the state’s highest peak rises in the distance, framed by brilliant fall foliage reflected in calm waters. The nearby Lazy Tom Bog offers a quieter, more intimate glimpse of autumn — its stillness a perfect counterpoint to the grandeur of Katahdin.

Further south, Jordan Pond in Autumn in Acadia National Park provides one of the most iconic fall vistas in New England, with mirrored reflections of color dancing across the water. Waterfalls also come alive in this season, and Screw Auger Falls is a perfect example, where rushing water winds through colorful forests.

For those seeking tranquil escapes, Umbagog Lake glows with fiery leaves along its shoreline, while Baxter State Park is a true wilderness paradise, filled with trails that weave through sweeping views of mountains and forests. At Sandy Stream Pond, visitors can often catch sight of wildlife against the brilliant backdrop of fall colors — a moment where nature feels timeless.

Whether you’re planning a road trip through Maine, hiking its many trails, or simply looking for inspiration, exploring these places in autumn offers an unforgettable experience. I’ve captured these scenes through my photography, available as prints on my fine art site, so you can bring a piece of Maine’s fall beauty into your home year-round.

Maine in autumn isn’t just a destination — it’s a season of discovery, where every bend in the road and every quiet pond reflects the fleeting brilliance of nature.

Exploring Lima, Ohio through My Lens — Nature & Wildlife Moments

Every photographer has that place that speaks to them, where light, wildlife, and landscapes converge in unexpected harmony. My hometown -Lima, OH offers a special favorite, the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District. I’ve spent countless mornings wandering the trails at places like Lauer Historical Farm, Ottawa Metro Park, and Lippincott Bird Sanctuary, hoping for that perfect moment to unfold.

One early misty morning, a blue heron stood motionless along the shores in Ottawa Metro Park, mountain-like silhouettes of trees in the background. That moment became “Blue Heron Reflection” — a quiet testament to stillness and patience.

On another crisp autumn day, I spotted a deer standing amid golden leaves and soft light — its gaze gentle but alert. That became “Forest Deer.”

Winter offered a completely different palette: stark branches and snow crunching under my boots, and a lone deer with frosty breath appearing through the silent woods in Teddy Bear Park. That became “Winter Deer.”

Back in autumn, I captured the graceful silhouette of a deer resting softly near crimson leaves — “Autumn Deer in Ohio.”

Lauer Historical Farm always pulls me back — not just for its peaceful architecture, but for the interplay of rusted metal and historic textures bathed in late-afternoon light. I processed one of those images into “Lauer Historical Farm — Ohio Textured.”

One memorable summer morning, I paused to watch a wood thrush perched on a slender branch, its song echoing through the trees in Kendrick Woods. A fleeting, intimate scene I titled “Single Wood Thrush.”

Sometimes, I just chase the fog — like the day I arrived at a countryside overlook as dawn broke through low mist, revealing layer upon layer of trees and fields shrouded in ethereal stillness. That became “Foggy Country Scene — Lima, Ohio.”

Why These Parks Matter

The Johnny Appleseed Park District nurtures a mosaic of wildlife habitats and historical landscapes across Lima and beyond — places like Lauer Historical Farm, Lippincott Bird Sanctuary, and the expansive Ottawa Metro Park. These parks are not just settings; they are living galleries where seasons paint and wildlife performs.
jampd.com

From wooded hills and wetlands to historical barns and open meadows, the parks offer an incredible variety of subjects within a few minutes of home — each location sharing a different story, texture, or color palette.

Photography Tips Inspired by These Parks

Tip

What to Try    Go early    Most of my memorable shots — like the heron, deer, or fog scenes — were captured in quiet, pre-dawn light.

Look for texture + light    At Lauer Farm, late afternoon shadows and weathered wood deserve as much attention as the subject itself.

Notice seasonal changes    Wildlife and mood shift dramatically — winter scenes feel still and crisp, while autumn scenes glow with warmth and movement.

Be patient & quiet    The magic moments (like the wood thrush or deer) often appear when you slow down and observe.

Explore different parks    From wetlands at Lippincott to river views at Ottawa, each area offers fresh subjects and lighting dynamics.

Lima’s local parks are more than spaces — they’re chapters in a visual story I’m honored to tell. Whether it’s a misty field, a wild creature at rest, or a historic structure glowing in sunset, these images are my personal love letter to the landscapes that inspire me.

If you’d like to explore prints, inquire on my work, or join photography walks in Lima together, I’d love to connect!
