One of my favorite ways to explore abstract photography is through motion. In Urban Blur, city streets in Lima, Ohio, become a dynamic tapestry of light and movement, showing the energy of urban life in a completely new way. The streaks and layers create a sense of speed and rhythm that a static image could never convey.

Nature provides endless opportunities for abstraction. In Aspen Blur in Autumn, the golden aspens sway gently, and with intentional motion blur, the leaves merge into a flowing, dreamlike pattern. This technique captures the essence of fall while emphasizing movement and color over literal detail.

Exploring String Lake in Grand Teton National Park: Summer, Fall, and Night Skies

Nestled in the heart of Grand Teton National Park, String Lake is a true hidden gem for visitors seeking serenity, reflection, and breathtaking scenery. This shallow, crystal-clear lake sits just north of Jenny Lake and offers easy access, incredible views of the Teton Range, and opportunities to hike, paddle, or simply relax along its shores. Over the course of different seasons and times of day, String Lake transforms into an artist’s canvas — vibrant in summer, peaceful in fall, and magical under the stars.

One of the best ways to take in this beauty is through photography, and I’ve captured some of my favorite moments here. In summer, the calm waters mirror the jagged peaks of the Tetons. You can see that serenity in my fine art photograph “String Lake Reflections in Summer”, where the alpine landscape comes alive in crisp detail. For visitors, summer is also the perfect season to swim, picnic, or simply walk along the lake’s gentle shoreline.

Kayaking in Autumn

As the seasons shift, String Lake becomes even more captivating. In fall, the trees surrounding the shoreline glow in golden tones, their reflections dancing across the surface of the water. It’s also one of the best times to bring a kayak, offering a quiet way to explore the lake while soaking in the colors of autumn. Paddling here allows you to experience the Tetons from a whole new perspective, especially with the crisp air and fewer crowds that come after the summer rush.

Night Photography at String Lake

When the sun dips below the mountains, String Lake reveals yet another face — a window into the cosmos. Far from city lights, this part of Grand Teton National Park offers some of the darkest skies in the country. On a clear night, the Milky Way rises above the Tetons, reflecting faintly on the water’s surface. My photograph “String Lake Milky Way” brings this experience to life, capturing the awe of standing beneath a galaxy-filled sky. For night photographers, String Lake is a must-visit spot, offering both foreground beauty and celestial wonders.

Planning Your Visit

The String Lake Loop Trail is one of the best ways to experience the area. Beginning at the String Lake Trailhead, located just north of Jenny Lake, the trailhead is easy to reach: turn west off Teton Park Road at the North Jenny Lake Junction (about 10.6 miles north of Moose Junction and 10 miles south of Jackson Lake Junction). Continue 1.4 miles to the String Lake Trailhead turn-off, with the parking area located immediately to the left. The loop trail circles the lake for about 3.7 miles, making it an easy, family-friendly hike with plenty of places to stop for photos.

Whether you’re visiting in the heat of summer, the quiet of autumn, or the stillness of night, String Lake is a destination that offers something unique in every season. For me, it has been a place of inspiration and creativity, and through my photography, I hope to share that magic with others. Exploring Maine in Autumn: A Journey Through Nature and Color

 There’s something unforgettable about experiencing Maine in the fall. As the leaves shift into a fiery display of crimson, gold, and orange, the state’s wild landscapes become a living canvas. From rugged mountains to serene lakes and rushing waterfalls, Maine’s natural beauty feels especially alive during autumn, making it a dream destination for travelers, hikers, and photographers alike.

On my journey through Maine, I explored some of the most breathtaking spots that capture the season’s magic. At Mount Katahdin from Abol Bridge, the state’s highest peak rises in the distance, framed by brilliant fall foliage reflected in calm waters. The nearby Lazy Tom Bog offers a quieter, more intimate glimpse of autumn — its stillness a perfect counterpoint to the grandeur of Katahdin.

Further south, Jordan Pond in Autumn in Acadia National Park provides one of the most iconic fall vistas in New England, with mirrored reflections of color dancing across the water. Waterfalls also come alive in this season, and Screw Auger Falls is a perfect example, where rushing water winds through colorful forests.

For those seeking tranquil escapes, Umbagog Lake glows with fiery leaves along its shoreline, while Baxter State Park is a true wilderness paradise, filled with trails that weave through sweeping views of mountains and forests. At Sandy Stream Pond, visitors can often catch sight of wildlife against the brilliant backdrop of fall colors — a moment where nature feels timeless.

 Every photographer has that place that speaks to them, where light, wildlife, and landscapes converge in unexpected harmony. My hometown -Lima, OH offers a special favorite, the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District. I’ve spent countless mornings wandering the trails at places like Lauer Historical Farm, Ottawa Metro Park, and Lippincott Bird Sanctuary, hoping for that perfect moment to unfold.

One early misty morning, a blue heron stood motionless along the shores in Ottawa Metro Park, mountain-like silhouettes of trees in the background. That moment became “Blue Heron Reflection” — a quiet testament to stillness and patience.

What to Try    Go early    Most of my memorable shots — like the heron, deer, or fog scenes — were captured in quiet, pre-dawn light.

Look for texture + light    At Lauer Farm, late afternoon shadows and weathered wood deserve as much attention as the subject itself.

Notice seasonal changes    Wildlife and mood shift dramatically — winter scenes feel still and crisp, while autumn scenes glow with warmth and movement.

Be patient & quiet    The magic moments (like the wood thrush or deer) often appear when you slow down and observe.

Explore different parks    From wetlands at Lippincott to river views at Ottawa, each area offers fresh subjects and lighting dynamics.
